Regent Street Flyover - Plans

Information on construction works

The construction of the new flyover commenced mid-May 2020. The works will be phased to maintain the A61 at full capacity for the majority of the time and the A64(M)/A64 at 50% capacity from June 2020 to completion of the works in spring 2022.

The existing concrete structure will be demolished and replaced with a steel and concrete bridge with the use of painted steel work, integrated lighting and public realm improvements to create a vibrant gateway structure with much-improved aesthetics. The project will cost approximately £30 million. A video of exactly how the work will be undertaken can be found here.

Without these works the rapidly deteriorating flyover would need to be closed to ensure public safety. It is a route normally used by 70,000 vehicles per day and acts as an important route for key workers and emergency services.

The plans below show the road layout and proposals over and under Regent Street Flyover. While work on the structure is progressing, some details, including the road layout, are still being finalised. The plans can also be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

Progress so far

For the past 18 months, work has progressed at pace to demolish and rebuild the southern bridge section of Regent Street Flyover and the project is now in its next phase. The northern bridge structure was demolished earlier this year and we will soon be in a position to start rebuilding the northern frame.

Upcoming closures

The final phase of work is set to start soon on the Regent Street Flyover project which will see the installation of the northern bridge beams.

The construction of the new flyover commenced in May 2020 after it reached the end of its usable life. Since then, the southern section of the bridge has been demolished and rebuilt and the northern section was demolished earlier this year. In this next, final phase, the northern bridge will be rebuilt ahead of the scheme completing in spring 2022.

The northern bridge beam installation will require a series of consecutive night closures of the A64(M)/A64 and A61 which are planned from 21 November for seven nights, with a further two weeks of A61 night time closures required to install support systems and form work.

The times of these closures are as followed:

• 21 November – 28 November; A61 and A64(M)/A64; during the hours of 8pm (A61) and 10pm (A64(M)) to 5:30am.

• 29 November - 12 December; A61; during the hours of 8pm to 5:30am.

Any opportunity to safely reduce the duration and number of closures will be taken.
